If you spend your summer holiday with your family in Zell am See and the surrounding area, you will also have to ask yourself now and then what to do if the weather is a little worse (which can happen in this area) – and adventurous families know that in this case nothing is more obvious than a hike, which you can also do with children. Our choice in this case was a relatively short hike, which went from the little village Maishofen to the snack station Stablbergalm.

Directions and possibility for snacks
We started from our accommodation in Maishofen, the highly recommended Saalachhof Castle. However, the path passes the village square of Maishofen – so if you start directly from there, your walk is a few hundred meters shorter. The village square itself is pretty and offers the possibility to stock up with cash or provisions if necessary.
Afterwards the hike leads through the residential area of Maishofen, over a bridge and shortly afterwards left over an unpaved footpath. Then you pass under a bridge and past a sawmill, after which the real wilderness begins. If you turn right here from a certain point (see map), you will reach a forest path which, among other things, leads past a goat enclosure. In our case two goats broke out of the enclosure and followed us for a while, which was quite droll. But as there is also a good part of the ascent here, it can be quite exhausting, especially with a heavy backpack or a small child on the back.
The relief follows when you reach a street a little later, which leads directly to the Jaustenstation Stablbergalm. This path is still steep, but at least well secured. If the forest path is too risky or too strenuous for you, you can take the street all the way – we did that on the way back, especially considering the slippery roots (see map).
The snack station Stablbergalm itself was closed in our case, so we simply ate our brought along snack on the armchairs in front of the door. But I could imagine that it is usually quite nice there. There is also a playground and a carp pond.
